The NCAA Stats staff determined that fast break points can be credited on free throws, and asked for that to be included in our NLS Basketball Software. It’s commonly counted as such in all levels of basketball including FIBA, NBA, and WNBA. It wasn’t commonly included in NCAA games in the past because previous statistical software did not have a method for entering it.
This update in the ruling appears in the 2020-21 Official NCAA Basketball Statisticians' Manual. The definition is featured on Page 13 under Definitions for Specialty Statistical Categories, which reads as follows:
Fast Break Points—Points scored on a quick counterattack
following a change of possession before the offense or defense
is set. New for 2020-21:
Fast break points can be counted when a FGA resulting in fast break points is made. Fast break points can also be counted for free throws resulting from a shooting foul called on a fast break FGA. If a team is in a bonus situation, and Team A commits a non-shooting foul on a player on Team B to prevent a fast break or in a fast break, free throws will not count as fast break points.
